Training Log: February 2025
February 2025 was one of the busiest months that I’ve had in a decade.
There was a lot going on. It was the law review submission cycle in the U.S., which you can read more about here (this might be especially interesting for Canadian legal academics). The cycle went well and it was pretty exciting, filled with ups and downs. In a future post, I’ll discuss the difference between U.S. and Canadian law reviews, as well as distinctions between the submission process. I also had to manage a lot of work-related commitments and personal life-related things. It was a pretty stressful period, and training helped me manage the intensity and stay focused.
Despite the workload, I was able to build up mileage, and ran some higher mileage weeks (80-90KM or so/week). I finished off the month with a periodization week where I cut my mileage in half to allow my body to adapt to the higher training volume. I’ve also been doing lots of weightlifting to build core strength, work on legs and glutes for endurance, and prevent injuries. The ASU pool in Tempe has been closed for several months, so I mostly ran, cycled, and lifted weights.
Here is a breakdown of my training volume for February:
I was also able to hike on the weekends, which was great. The weather wasn’t too hot in February. There are many good hiking spots within a 15 minute drive from Central Phoenix. Dreamy Draw and North Mountain are very good and have several trails with different difficulty levels.
I also want to change my training this spring and summer. I’ve been doing a lot more speed work over the past several months, and worked on threshold sessions to build VO2 max. I want to run a bit slower and build mileage up to 100 KM/week or so and do 1 threshold session per week. I also want to swim more now that the ASU pool in Tempe is open. I also want to continue to go on some nice easy hikes over the weekend. This coming week should be pretty temperate, and I’m excited to train in cooler weather.
