Training Log: Jan 1-6, 2024.

I enjoyed this past training week, which concluded my monthly training bloc. I ran roughly 100 KM at an easy pace with no thresholds or intervals. I averaged 20 KM /day most of the week, and I finished the week with a double run and some weight training. Some weeks I feel pretty drained and the mileage feels particularly difficult. In contrast, this was a smoother training week. I wished most runs didn't end when they did. I rarely feel this way, but I appreciated it.

I am slowly adapting to the cold weather in Ottawa. I haven’t ran hills in months (Phoenix is very flat). So, I used this week to acclimatize to the weather and terrain. I kept my heart rate around 125 BPM for the runs and slept a lot. My resting heart rate dropped down to 38 BPM. I don’t feel overtrained. I’m excited to get back into the pool and swim more. I also plan to do so more intervals and threshold sessions soon.

I also hooked up my bike trainer for the first time in months. I use a TacX Boost Trainer (it’s not direct drive, and I don’t use Zwift), I like to ride and watch movies/documentaries in the winter during periodization weeks and on rest days.

This coming week is a recovery week, meaning I decrease my mileage by 50% or so. These weeks help my body adapt to mileage and avoid injury. I’m excited to be back for early morning Winter runs. I find it’s the best time of the year to run, even though it can be particularly cold and gruelling.
